Here’s how:
In order to become a butterfly, a caterpillar must first form its chrysalis on a plant in your Garden, inside which nature works her magic and the transition to butterfly takes place.
Each type of caterpillar only forms its chrysalis on one specific type of Butterpillaflora plant, which are available in the Seed Shoppe. So before you go looking for a caterpillar, you must ensure that you are growing the correct Butterpillaflora plant in your own Garden, and that is at the correct growth stage (it must have sprouted, i.e. be at a green stage of growth, but must not yet be flowering.)
If you then spot a caterpillar in another Garden, it will head straight to your Garden and form its chrysalis on that plant (assuming it is the correct Butterpillaflora plant for that caterpillar type, and it is not yet flowering.)
You then need to nurture the plant to fully grown (i.e. wait until it flowers.) You cannot sprinkle Fairy Dust on Butterpillaflora plants – they must be grown naturally, however they bloom in just a few hours rather than days.
As soon as the plant flowers, the butterfly will be released from the chrysalis and will flutter away into the distance, leaving a sparkling flower behind!
You must keep that same sparkling flower in your Garden, and some time later (assuming you have the correct food out) the butterfly will return to your Garden and flutter around between the flowers – this means she will be feeding there within 30 minutes!
The butterfly will keep returning until either she is spotted feeding, or the flower becomes Ready for Harvest, whichever happens first. So don’t worry if she is missed the first time she visits – she will be back and you should get plenty of chances to have her spotted!
After the butterfly has been spotted, she will not return again and the flower will stop sparkling to show that it is no longer attracting a butterfly. To get your next butterfly visit, you will need to repeat the process by spotting another caterpillar and nurturing it in your Garden (although in some rare and lucky cases, a butterfly may decide to feed twice in the same Garden 🙂
You can only nurture one chrysalis in your Garden at any one time. But as soon as the flower blooms and the butterfly is released, you can immediately begin trying for another one (you don’t need to wait until the butterfly has been spotted, only until it has been released from its chrysalis.)
For information about the tasks you need to complete to unlock each seed for attracting butterflies/caterpillars, please see the information in the Seed Shoppe.
Additional tip: Like the rainforest wildlife and the hummingbirds, the first listed flower for each caterpillar is its favourite. This is a different flower for each caterpillar, so you can increase the overall attraction power for a certain caterpillar by planting multiple of its favourite flower (the exception being the Wriggly Red, which is only attracted by the Supershroom, of which you can only have one.)
Good luck and above all, have fun!
Preparing for butterflies!
In order to complete the butterflies from start to finish you will need a possible 270 Forest Ruby Seeds to buy your butterpillaflora plants. This does not take into account that you might get some twin butterflies (so will be slightly less rubies) but also you might lose some plants (so will need more rubies) by not attaching a chrysalis in time.
You will also need to ensure you have an ample supply of Forest Amber Seeds and Forest Sunlight Seeds to buy your Supershrooms, which you need to attract caterpillars to your own garden. So it is a good idea to ensure you have a good supply of these Forest Seeds before you start on the butterfly quest.
Butterpillaflora
As the name suggests, the Butterpillaflora plants are favourites of Fairyland’s caterpillars and butterflies!
Each seed must be unlocked in turn by completing the tasks shown.
Butterpillaflora plants cannot be sprinkled with Diamond Dust or Fruiting Dust to speed up their growth – they must be grown naturally. They all take exactly 3 minutes to first ‘sprout’.

Please Note
The Rainbow Butterpillaflora is a little different to the others. There is no Rainbow Caterpillar, however the Rainbow Butterpillaflora can host ANY other caterpillar’s chrysalis. In addition, you can have multiple Rainbow Butterpillafloras hosting a chrysalis in your Garden at the same time, and when hosting a chrysalis, they can be sprinkled with Diamond Dust and Fruiting Dust to speed their growth.
The Rainbow Butterpillaflora also sometimes works a little magic on the chrysalis it is hosting, producing a beatiful Rainbow Butterfly instead of the usual butterfly for that caterpillar (this happens approximately 50% of the time!) Finally, under certain conditions, the Rainbow Butterpillaflora is capable of producing a beautiful Rainbow in your Garden (but you’ll need to figure out how to do it!)
Supershroom
Supershrooms are the only Magical Mushroom to have a 100% deterrent effect on Mice, Mallards and all Mythological wildlife while fully grown! Anyone can plant Supershrooms, regardless of your Wildlife Level, however you need to earn them by collecting either ‘Forest Amber’ or ‘Forest Sunlight’ Jewel Seeds (these are dropped by many easy-to-spot types of Fairyland wildlife – see the Wildlife Guide for details.) Supershrooms remain fully grown for 36 hours, during which time they also attract friendly caterpillars to your Garden! They have no effect at all once they have become Ready For Harvest.
Price:
5 Forest Amber Seeds or 5 Forest Sunlight Seeds
Wilts if not watered for 48 hours
Dies if not watered for 96 hours
Fully Grown after 0.5 days

Congratulations!!
You have now completed all the butterfly levels and have unlocked the Rainbow Butterpillaflora.
The Rainbow Butterpillaflora will attract ALL caterpillars to your garden while it is sparkling as long as you are using a supershroom.
The type of butterfly that is attracted to the rainbow butterpillaflora depends on the colour caterpillar that you spotted to create the chrysalis on your rainbow butterpillaflora. You will either get the colour butterfly of the caterpillar you spotted or you will get a rainbow butterfly! So for example, if you spotted a Baby Blue Caterpillar to attach the chrysalis to your rainbow butterpillaflora then there is a 50/50 chance as to whether you will attract a Mystic River Butterfly or Rainbow Butterfly.
TOP TIPS!!
When looking to create a chrysalis remember that your butterpillaflora must be at the right stage of growth. Older than 3 mins but not fully grown. If you spot a caterpillar outside of these times then it will not return to your garden and attach to your plant. You can only host ONE chrysalis at a time, if you already have a chrysalis growing in your garden and you spot another caterpillar it will not form another chrysalis.
When trying to attract the caterpillars to your garden you could try and attach a chrysalis to each of the butterpillaflora plants you need for that caterpillar to help save on your rubies. REMEMBER…you can only host one chrysalis at a time.
Try not to get stressed about finding a caterpillar in time for your plant, it is inevitable that you might not always find one. You could try saving a few gardens that are attracting the caterpillars you are looking for and then you have some gardens ready to hunt when you plant.
A popular method to help find a caterpillar in time is to freeze your garden while looking for a caterpillar alert, this prevents your butterpillaflora from getting too old. REMEMBER….unfreeze your garden before you start watering for a caterpillar or it will not wriggle away to your garden.
Hunting in gardens with rules for caterpillars can be contentious. It is important to remember that, in no-rules gardens, whether you have a plant doesn’t matter. In gardens with rules, preference is often given to fairies with plants.
If you do lose out on a caterpillar don’t be a sore loser! Just move on and try and find another garden, the worst thing that can happen is that you lose your opportunity to attach a chrysalis to your butterpillaflora. It is not the end of the world and not worth getting upset over.
Remember it is just a game and it is supposed to be a challenge, if everything in life was handed to us on a plate it wouldn’t be much fun would it? Enjoy the butterflies for the challenge they were meant to be and when you reach the end you will appreciate it all the more knowing that it wasn’t just given to you.
